Sonata and BMW 5 series take top marks in collision assessments

The government revised the collision screening rating system before this year’s round of crash assessments. The results have just been published. The scoring system is now a 5 star scale. Only two cars managed to net a five star rating in the tests. Only the Bavarian Motor Works 5 series and also the Hyundai Motors Sonata got five star ratings. This round of assessments was for 34 different models, and it involved a new sliding side impact.

Collision assessment standards being renewed

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration changed the crash test rating system. Instead of the usual one to four star scale, it is now one to five. The first round of testing, based on USA Today, has just concluded. The first round of testing had numerous cars. About 34 automobiles were part of it. The second round will test 22 more. Along with the new rating system, more stringent criteria are being used. A brand new assessment is being added also. The new test is for a side collision when skidding. Collision avoidance systems for instance electronic stability was also tested by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Safest are Bavarian Motor Works and Hyundai Motors

Only two cars with the crash screening that got five stars. The Bavarian Motor Works 5 series and the Hyundai Motors Sonata were the only vehicles to warrant a perfect five-star crash test. Only three vehicles got less than a 4 also. The crash assessment proved the Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid not to be very safe. They did their crash assessment just to get a three star rating. This past year the Camry did the best. It got the highest scores available. The Nissan Versa received the lowest score of two. All of the other autos did alright. They got a four star rating given to them.
